Megan Thee Stallion's SNL Performance Asks Us to Protect Black Women

September 2024 · 2 minute read

Megan Thee Stallion served as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live's season premiere this week, where she performed two of her hit tracks. Megan Thee Stallion performed "Don’t Stop" alongside Young Thug, but it was during her performance of "Savage" that the rapper had the words "Protect Black Women" projected on the wall behind her and the dancers.

Megan's message is particularly important in 2020 amid the Black Lives Matter movement, and following the grand jury's decision not to charge the police officers involved in Breonna Taylor's murder. There is also serious inequity regarding the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on Black communities, and Megan has regularly spoken out regarding the dangers facing Black women right now.

Earlier this year, Megan revealed that she'd been shot, later naming musician Tory Lanez as the shooter. Of the terrifying incident, she wrote on Instagram, "On Sunday morning, I suffered gunshot wounds, as a result of a crime that was committed against me and done with the intention to physically harm me. I was never arrested, the police officers drove me to the hospital where I underwent surgery to remove the bullets."

"Black women are so unprotected & we hold so many things in to protect the feelings of others w/o considering our own," she wrote on Twitter. "It might be funny to y’all on the internet and just another messy topic for you to talk about but this is my real life and I’m real life hurt and traumatized."
